AAOM Introduces On-Island Expert Pediatric Orthopedic Care

 No more need to fly to O‘ahu to see a specialist for children’s orthopedics; now the expert care you need for your keiki will come to you!         

 All Access Ortho Maui (AAOM) is booking pediatric orthopedic consultations with Dr. Byron Izuka, M.D., starting now. A board-certified pediatric surgeon with more than 20 years experience in the field, Dr. Izuka will visit AAOM on the third Thursday of each month beginning April 21. Dr. Izuka is a UH JABSOM Associate Clinical Professor and sees patients of all ages, with particular expertise in orthopedic problems for newborns, infants, children and adolescents. This is good news for island keiki, as what is done for adults may not be effective or even necessary for children.

          “Children are not just little adults, and they often cannot be treated in the same way,” says Dr. Izuka. He has developed several novel treatments for fractures in children with numerous presentations, publications and research awards to his credit. In addition to surgery, he has particular expertise in non-operative treatment methods and has developed new ways of treating common fractures of the wrist, elbow and leg in children.

          “For the best care possible, children need pediatricians and specialists with pediatric training,” says AAOM’s founder, Dr. Gary “Kiki” Takashiro Blum. “That’s why we are excited to welcome Dr. Izuka to our clinic each month and offer island families an even higher level of care.”

Together with his team of physician assistants, Dr. Blum opened Maui’s first standalone orthopedic urgent care clinic in December 2021. The clinic provides immediate, specialized care for injuries that are not severe enough to merit care at a trauma center. No appointment is necessary, and the clinic is open to all.
